The Pinella grape in the Euganean Hills told by Ca' Lustra

Pinella is a white grape variety believed to have originated from the southern Dalmatian islands, with records of its presence in the Euganean Hills dating back to the 1300s. Once cultivated in other regions as well, today it survives in just a few hectares, found exclusively in the Euganean Hills and Slovenia’s Vipava Valley.

In the Euganean Hills, Pinella has experienced alternating periods of cultivation and decline, until a renewed interest emerged in the early 2000s through a project aimed at reviving ancient native varieties. While in the 1970s and 1980s it was mainly used in blends to add freshness, over the past fifteen years it has started to gain recognition in some noteworthy single-varietal vinifications. The great diversity of soils and microclimates in the Euganean Hills enhances the expressive potential of this grape, resulting in varied styles, all marked by a strong varietal identity.

Pinella is characterized by high acidity, delicate floral and fruity notes and a late ripening that allows for a perfect balance even in the hottest, driest years. Thanks to its remarkable ability to retain freshness, it proves to be a variety particularly suited to the challenges posed by climate change.

On May 24–25th, 2025, during Cantine Aperte, Pinella will be the star of "Pin&Là: a bridge between Italy and Slovenia"—a weekend event created together with our friends of Cantina Reassi to promote this ancient native grape and the only two areas in the world where it is still grown: the Euganean Hills and the Vipava Valley. In a festive atmosphere, visitors will have the chance to taste different interpretations of Pinella, shaped by diverse soils, climates and winemaking styles.
