Sassonero – DOC Colli Euganei Merlot

Sassonero – DOC Colli Euganei Merlot

The DOC Colli Euganei Merlot Sassonero from the Zanovello red wine selection is a full-bodied, enveloping Merlot, a sincere reflection of the unique characteristics of the Euganean Hills territory. The surprising persistence and complexity of taste and fragrance make this red wine a Ca’ Lustra excellence.

Difficulties temper man and vine. Our Merlot vines, fearless, face torrid and dry summers surrounded by the outcrops of red limestone scales typical of these soils. They present shallow depths in which the plants ‘cling’ to the mother rock, generating an intense Merlot. The ruby red colour is impenetrable and dense, immediately revealing the wine’s complexity; the nose opens with heady floral notes and scents of jam and ripe fruit that evolve into balsamic and spicy hints.
The excellent tannic texture makes our Sassonero a soft Merlot with a long persistence.

Pairings with our Merlot Sassonero
The low yield and ageing in wooden barrels make Sassonero a full-bodied, soft and elegant DOC Colli Euganei Merlot, ideal to accompany a platter of cold cuts and salami, as well as second courses of meat, in particular a delicious pork fillet with plums. Leave to decant and serve at around 18°C.

History and production of Merlot
Originally from the Gironde in France, Merlot has spread to Italy since the second half of the 19th century.
A gentle wine with fruity, round and ripe notes and delicate tannins. Merlot prefers soils rich in organic substance and well supplied with water. As it is an early variety that tends to concentrate sugars, we harvest the grapes at a time when the sugar residue is not yet too high: only in this way can we obtain a balanced red wine. Furthermore, with a deep respect for the plant, we have always worked for a limited productivity of the vines.

We thus obtain a full-bodied Merlot that is prepared for long ageing in wooden barrels, which gives this fine red wine softness and elegance.
Our Sassonero is named after Sassonegro, the place where we cultivate our vines.
