Tasting „Old Vintages“

Zanovello Selection wines are characterized by good longevity and interesting aging pattern in the bottle.
Over the years, we decided to set aside many bottles to be opened and tasted in due time. In our perspective, this habit is useful to study the evolution of each wine during bottle aging, in order to continue experimentating with our products. Moreover, not everyone has the right space at home, and sometimes the patience, to wait for the best moment to open a bottle of wine. Therefore, we decided to share more frequently this experience with you, not only on the occasion of vertical tastings.

For one weekend every month, we will put on tap one of our most valuable labels to share with you the journey of research and experimentation for that specific wine across the years.

We invite you to live with us this experience and discover all the emotions preserved in time in each bottle. A journey among our old vintages to understand how wine evolves and how can it inform us of the future. Then, if you would like to keep and relive these same emotions at home, a limited number of bottles will by available for purchase.

Old Vintages“ Tasting – Sassonero 2013

The 2013 vintage was one of the best ones in the last 20 years. It was characterized by a fairly rainy spring and a moderately hot summer allowing uniform ripening of the grapes both in terms of phenols and sugar concentration. The yields per hectare were particularly low, consequently we obtained firm and concentrated grapes.
In such conditions of perfect ripening, grape acidity decreases allowing immediate wine maturation and making it suitable for both right away consumption and for aging, with the benefit of good sapidy to support it in the long run.
The Merlot with which we produce Sassonero is located on a steep hill in Arquà Petrarca, called „Sassonegro“. The name takes its origin from the soil composition of the hill, very rich in red limestone, a particular type of limestone which flakes away along parallel lines and darkens under the summer sun. The landscape is charming and typically Mediterranean, with an average rainfall among the lowest in Italy. The soil depth is only 50 cm and the vegetation has to literally cling to the bedrock beneath for stability and nutrient supply.
This challenging environment gives origin to a concentrated, full-bodied wine with an incredible evolutionary potential, and 2013 gave us one of its best representatives.

Saturday July 16th and Sunday July 17th
Tasting „Old Vintages“ – ‚A Cengia 2016

The 2016 vintage is one of the most enchanting and balanced of the last decade. The spring was rainy and not too cold, ensuring an excellent water supply to the budding vines. This was followed by a hot and dry summer, with scarse rain. This rain pattern, coniciding precisely with the flowering phase, yielded few but high quality grapes. This allowed optimal ripening characterized by healthy and concentrated grapes.
The White Muscat grown on the South – East side of Mount Venda enjoys a constant gentle breeze that keeps the grapes healthy and prevents the spread of molds.
The grapes, crushed and gently pressed immediately after harvest, were fermented in large 3000 liter casks. Fermentation was rapid, followed by one year of resting on fine lees with weekly batonnage. It was bottled the following summer after light filtration.

Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 June 2021
Old Vintages“ Tasting – Pedevenda 2016

The 2016 vintage was among the most beautiful and balanced of the last decade. The rainy and not too cold spring ensured optimal water supply to the budding vines and was followed by a hot and dry summer, scarce in precipitation. These conditions permitted the optimal ripening of healthy and concentrated grapes.
We cultivate our Manzoni 6.0.13 crossbreed on the South – East side of Monte Venda, where it enjoys a constant gentle breeze keeping the grapes healthy by avoiding the spread of moulds.
The harvest was completed in early September and fermentation took place in 30hl oak barrels by indigenous yeasts. The wine was bottled following about 10 months of aging in casks on fine lees and a gross filtration.
When young, the Manzoni Bianco releases citrus fruit and fresh flowers notes. With time, the „genetic“ ancestry of the Rhenish Riesling asserts itself, with light almond and ripe yellow fruit notes. Acidity diminishes in favor of a pleasing draft, becoming an unforgettable glass.
We tried it and we liked it very much. Thus, we believe it is time for you to discover it as well.

Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th May 2021
Tasting „Old Vintages“ – Girapoggio 2012

The 2012 vintage was very dry, the last one in which we used artificial irrigation in order to save our vineyards from the extreme summer heat. In the Podere Aganoor near Arquà Petrarca rainfall was absent for several months. The drought was particularly harsh on the Cabernet, which required attentive care. The grapes were harvested slightly in advance in order to preserve the freshness of primary aromas and to avoid over-ripening due to heat. Therefore we obtained a Girapoggio with direct and intense aromas of fruits and spices, with strong tannins and good freshness.
We have tasted it and we are convinced the moment has come to introduce it to the world as well. It is a wine that surprises for its solid structure counterbalanced by the sinuous tannins.
